PlanetSide Joystick Support

In an upcoming release, PlanetSide will support joysticks as a control interface for vehicles and soldiers.

Joysticks can have unique control configurations for the different objects that a player might use, including different types of Vehicles (ground, hover, flight), soldiers, guided missiles and gunner weapons.

Joysticks will have configurable properties for different vehicle types, such as pitch and yaw for air vehicles, aiming the turret on the Lightning, or strafing for hover vehicles.

These different properties can be configured independently. Each configuration is visualized by and can be tested using the Response Curve on the left side of the options UI. These different properties control the response to different levels of input.

There are two axes on the Response Curve, Input and Response. Input is, in general terms, the position of the joystick within its range of motion. Response is the onscreen effect of the input. On the Response Curve, you can see that there is a segment of the line that is straight (Linear) and one that is curved (Non-Linear). Sensitivity and Curvature control the position of this point, affecting the joystick's behavior in the game.

  • Joystick Sensitivity: This is a control of the joystick's Linear responsiveness to input. The slider controls the point on the input axis where the joystick becomes more responsive. Moving this slider will move the curve along the input axis.
  • Joystick Curvature: This is a control of the joystick's Non-linear responsiveness to input. The slider controls the point on the response axis where the joystick where the input becomes Non-linear. Moving this slider will move the curve along the response axis.
  • Joystick Dead Zone: Controls how much play around the center of the joystick is required before the joystick becomes responsive to input.
  • Joystick Saturation: Controls the joystick range of input motion. Bringing this slider in will reduce the amount of input required to reach its full response value.
